Two things to make clear from the start - crude skill mix changes are in no ones interest – nor, of course, is an understaffed ward. Secondly, the area I am about to discuss is complex and a blog can hardly do it full justice. What though has prompted this article is a growing narrative that goes something like this – ‘there is research that shows if you reduce the number of Registered Nurses more patients die, therefore new roles like Nursing Associates (or previously Assistant Practitioners*) should not be developed if they effect skill mix’.
